Nel momento più cupo della crisi, quando oltre cinquecentomila lavoratori vengono sospinti nel tunnel oscuro della disoccupazione, ha senso proporre una visione positiva delle cose? Si rischia d’essere tacciati di ingenuità, di ottimismo immotivato. Possiamo parlare di speranza e di futuro a un giovane a cui è stata sottratta la tranquillità di un lavoro stabile e dignitoso, e di una pensione per la vecchiaia? Nonostante tutto, sono convinto di sì: dobbiamo guardare avanti con fiducia.

Invece, sento talvolta nel centrosinistra riaffiorare il rimpianto per il mondo di prima, quando c'erano ancora comunisti e democristiani, e tutto sembrava più solido e chiaro.

Personalmente, non provo alcuna nostalgia per l'Italia del passato, se non per la tenerezza che suscita sempre il ricordo dei giorni fragili dell’adolescenza.

Politicamente parlando, furono anni di grandi illusioni e grandi nefandezze; anni di riforme importanti ma anche di piombo e di stragi ancora senza colpevoli.

Neanche l'inquietante ascesa di Berlusconi al potere riesce a farmi rimpiangere il passato.

L’Italia prima del Cavaliere non era l’Eldorado, così come quella di oggi non è l’inferno.

Dobbiamo superare il vezzo di una visione nostalgica, cupa, che non sa guardare avanti e infondere fiducia nei cittadini.

A livello globale, il mondo che mi circonda è migliore di quello in cui coltivavo le mie speranze di adolescente. Molte di quelle speranze si sono persino avverate, come la fine dell’apartheid in Sudafrica, la caduta di tanti regimi fascisti, come quello cileno, la fine della guerra fredda. Cresce la democrazia nel mondo, e ogni anno milioni di persone escono dal dramma della fame: troppo lentamente, è vero, comunque un percorso positivo è in atto, tanto che ora ci poniamo la questione se, migliorando la vita di tanti, avremo risorse per tutti.

Non ho alcun rimpianto per quel mondo di prima, chiuso da muri, avvelenato da contrapposizioni ideologiche, sempre a rischio di catastrofe nucleare.

Oggi stiamo smantellando gli arsenali atomici che la politica dei blocchi aveva preparato in quegli anni, e questo è già un segno concreto che il mondo che lascerò sarà comunque migliore di quello che avevo trovato. Sono ancora tante le contraddizioni e le lacerazioni che affliggono la nostra complessa società contemporanea, ma il mondo sta progredendo.

Qualcuno, con il cappello e gli occhiali neri indosso, obietterà che è solo cambiata la dislocazione del Male, ma non i suoi effetti, perché le cause che lo scatenano, le disuguaglianze, la povertà, fisica e culturale, l’intolleranza, sono ancora tutte qui, e alimentano nuovi focolai di guerra e di tensione sociale. Tuttavia, cambiando ottica, s’intravedono segnali di una più ampia volontà dei grandi del mondo di affrontare i problemi del pianeta, a iniziare dal riscaldamento globale. Tra i grandi, vi sono oggi paesi prima relegati nel sottosviluppo e anche questo è un buon segno.

In Italia abbiamo consegnato il monopolio dell’ottimismo al ghigno ipocrita del presidente del Consiglio, proprio a lui che, svalutando la ricerca, impoverendo la cultura, aumentando povertà e disparità, sta portando indietro il nostro paese.

Nell’era del Cavaliere, molti nel centrosinistra si sono lasciati andare a un pessimismo cosmico che porta a vedere nero; sempre con lo sguardo torvo a predicare che in Italia non si può più vivere, che abbiamo toccato il fondo. Tuttavia la “politica con gli occhiali scuri indosso”, di chi vede tutto oscuro, non è per nulla attraente. E fa il gioco di chi vorremmo battere.

Noi democratici dobbiamo allora riappropriarci della speranza e tornare a infonderla, con parole chiare, agli italiani. Proponendo una politica di cose concrete, e giuste, che parta dalla valorizzazione delle straordinarie risorse che l’Italia possiede.

I problemi ci sono, è inutile nasconderli. Mafie e camorre si sono infiltrate nel tessuto produttivo, inquinandolo, al Sud come al Nord, a Palermo come a Roma o a Milano. Il debito pubblico enorme frena lo sviluppo, gli investimenti, e sta peggiorando. Abbiamo il prelievo fiscale tra i più alti e i servizi tra i peggiori. Siamo tra i primi per spese militari nel mondo, e tra gli ultimi per investimenti in innovazione e ricerca. L'immigrazione, non gestita da adeguate politiche di integrazione e di mediazione culturale, ha aggravato i conflitti sociali. Il precariato domina il mondo del lavoro dei giovani. La stessa presenza di Berlusconi al governo è un duplice problema, per il suo carico di conflitti di interessi, questioni morali e giudiziarie, e per quello che fa.

Molte delle questioni citate sono frutto degli errori di una cattiva politica.

Nonostante tutto, l'Italia è andata avanti, come se fosse assuefatta, da secoli, a dover convivere con una politica e un'amministrazione che pongono ostacoli, divorano risorse, in sostanza chiedono molto e restituiscono poco.

L’Italia di prima era l’Italia delle permanenti crisi politiche, della moneta debolissima e dell’inflazione: di questo va dato atto al governo Prodi di aver chiesto agli italiani un sacrificio straordinario, ma ripagato con l'ingresso nella moneta unica europea.

L’Italia di prima, post-rurale, raccontata da Pasolini, ruspante, era lacerata dalle contraddizioni dello sviluppo rapido del dopoguerra; poi, quella rampante e cinica, smascherata dai film di Sordi, è stata un'Italia ipocrita, affamata di crescita senza regole, la stessa che ha portato infine al potere il Cattivo Maestro di villa Certosa.

Non era un'Italia diversa, sana e sobria, come qualcuno la ricorda con rimpianto. È in quell'Italia che nasce l'edonismo di massa, la smania del consumo, della ricchezza facile. Il Cattivo Maestro ha colto il segno dei tempi e s'è posto a capo di un nuovo impero fatto di immagini, pubblicità, ragazze-copertina, sogno virtuale in grado di condizionare l'immaginario di un intero popolo.

L'Italia di oggi, dopo trent'anni di sbornia, ha di certo bisogno di una maggiore sobrietà e di consumi più ragionati. Senza moralismi o censure. Bisogna guardare avanti, accettando però la sfida che il progresso si può guidare, con una politica seria, puntando sull'istruzione e la cultura, unici antidoti contro i cattivi maestri, e sulla qualità vera della vita.

Un'Italia che deve avere fiducia che un'alternativa è possibile.

Togliamo il cappello e gli occhiali scuri, e guardiamo al nostro paese con sguardo nuovo.

Guardiamolo con gli occhi verdi brillanti che rispecchiano la bellezza dei nostri paesaggi, che s’emozionano davanti alla nostra storia, e si stupiscono sia del fervore tecnologico di certe aree industriali all’avanguardia, sia dei maestosi silenzi dei nostri monti.

Occhi verdi che guardano al futuro, ma che non sottovalutano le ricchezze del presente: gli italiani sono un popolo dotato di numerosi talenti, di una non comune creatività, in grado di generosi slanci sociali. Formiamo una comunità ricca di varietà, diversità, frutto di millenni di scorribande di vari forestieri, la cui civiltà ancora vive in noi. Questo patrimonio, su cui oggi si fonda la nostra stessa identità, è prezioso, unico al mondo, e non dobbiamo disperderlo.

Purtroppo la politica dell'attuale governo, anziché valorizzare le virtù del nostro popolo, indulge sulle sue debolezze e paure, acuite dalla crisi, e sta causando danni gravi al tessuto sociale e culturale del nostro paese, ferite difficili da rimarginare. Non sarà facile e ci vorrà tempo e tanta buona politica per riparare i danni provocati dal Cattivo Maestro.

Tuttavia ce la faremo.

Vent'anni fa siamo risorti dallo scandalo del vino al metanolo e ora produciamo vino di qualità eccelsa. Eravamo indietro nelle energie rinnovabili, e in un anno abbiamo prodotto un aumento di energia dal vento e dal sole pari a quella di una grande centrale nucleare.

Siamo un paese straordinario.

Se l'Italia fosse anche governata con saggezza, sarebbe il luogo più bello dove vivere, in grado di garantire benessere e qualità della vita a molte più persone. Noi democratici sapremo governarla.

Non partiamo da zero. Basta guardare l'Italia con gli occhi brillanti di fiducia, occhi verdi perché sarà verde il futuro della nostra economia, che garantirà lavoro a chi lo ha perso e speranze per i giovani. Questa è la politica che il Partito democratico seguirà se Dario Franceschini ne diventerà il segretario, e per questo io sono con lui.
